TWO TIME OCEAN ROWER | WORLD FIRST RECORD HOLDER
A HAT-TRICK OF OCEANS!
In 2007, Elin rowed across the Atlantic Ocean. Completing 2552 miles in a 24 foot boat as part of an all female pair. Dubbed the 'Nautical Nurses', the journey took 77 days 7 hours and 37 minutes. The girls conquered 40ft waves, scorching heat and narrow misses with cargo ships. Elin landed in Antigua to become the first Welsh woman to ever row across the Atlantic Ocean.
Before deciding to row across the Atlantic Elin had never rowed and had never been out to sea. But she was determined to fulfil her dream, and to raise money and awareness for metabolic research. The area that Elin had chosen to study for her PhD.
Fourteen months later Elin joined team 'Ocean Angels' to set a world FIRST record by becoming the first all female crew to row 3139 miles across the Indian Ocean - taking 78 days, 15 hours and 54 minutes. The girls were battered by the elements, faced heavy storms that broke vital equipment and injured one of the crew. But continued on their quest blessed with an amazing team spirit.
More people have been to space than have rowed an ocean - let alone row two oceans!
Not content to leave the third (and largest) ocean untouched, Elin began the mammoth task of learning how to sail and took part in the Clipper Round the World yacht race in order to make the crossing of nearly 6,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean. Completing her hat-trick of oceans!
ABOUT NURSE ELIN
Elin has also completed numerous other adventures. Her efforts over the years has raised over £250,000 for her chosen charities. She is particularly passionate about raising money for research that will eventually help the lives of children.
Elin’s rowing and fundraising achievements have been acknowledged by the Welsh Assembly, with an award ‘For Services to Wales’, presented by First Minister of Wales Rhodri Morgan, in October 2009.
Elin Haf Davies grew up in the small village of Parc, close to the shores of beautiful Bala Lake, North Wales. Elin knew from an early age that she wanted to be a children's nurse, and achieved a life time dream when she completed her nurse training at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, London.
At eighteen, Elin left Wales to work as a volunteer in a 'Save the Children' orphanage in Lesotho, South Africa. Although inspired by working with the children Elin felt a real hiraeth for Wales and came home after only four months. The experience was a major milestone in her life.
Despite the fact that she never really achieved much at school Elin continued to study after qualifying as a Children's Nurse, gaining a BSc (Hons) in Neuroscience, an MSc in Research Methods. She has also completed her PhD thesis; developing markers of neurological involvement in children with metabolic disorders at University College London. Making her a Dr Nurse!
'Nurse Elin' has found that combining research and adventure simultaneously satisfies her craving for new knowledge and new experiences. Her publications to date are:
