The best opportunity to learn how to sail

Rolex FastnetElin was honoured to be given the opportunity to join an experienced crew of 10 men under the command of RORC Commodore Andrew McIrvine for the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race. Andrew, Jason,  Jonathan, James, Geoff, Paul, Quintin, Adam, Simon, and Chris  welcomed Elin into the crew onboard a First 40 Beneteau, despite the fact that she knew nothing about sailing.

The Rolex Fastnet Sailing Race traces its history back to 1925, and is held biennially. When British Isles weather conspires to deliver conditions typical of the time of year it becomes a true test of human endeavour. It is for this reason that the 608-nautical mile race sees man and machine set against the elements. The 44th edition, which left Cowes on Sunday, 14 August 2011, was no exception. For the seasoned sailor this race is an opportunity to take on one of the biggest, offshore classics in the world of yacht racing. For an ocean-rower without any sailing experience, it was a challenge of huge proportions Leaving Cowes on the Isle of Wight sailors race to the Fastnet Rock, off the southwestern tip of Ireland before completing a dramatic dogfight all the way to the finish in Plymouth.

After a successful season to qualify for the Fastnet (winning the Assuage trophy) hopes amongst the crew were high as they set off, however only a few miles short of the rocks the crew experienced steering failure which left them out of the race and relying on the emergency tiller to get back to port. Like all the crew Elin was bitterly disappointed, despite being witness to a great learning experience which will no doubt serve her well for future sea-miles! The dramatic rescue of Rambler 100 during the race was also a reminder, if one was needed of the dangers involved.

Elin nominated charity Well Child http://www.justgiving.com/ELIN-HAF-DAVIES for this (ad)venture as Elin wanted to show her admiration and respect for WellChild 2011 Nurse of the Year (and close friend) Karen Higgins!
